What We Help With
Anxiety and worry
Racing thoughts, panic, constant tension, or avoiding things you once handled without a second thought.
Depression and low mood
Feeling flat, exhausted, hopeless or disconnected from the people and activities that used to matter to you.
Shift work, stress and burnout
Twelve-hour shifts, rotating days and nights, and an hour on the bus or the highway in each direction. By the time you're home, there's barely enough left for supper, let alone for your family or yourself. Then the rotation flips, and your sleep starts over from scratch.
Counselling can help you deal with the exhaustion, irritability and disconnection that build up over months and years of this, and with the guilt that often comes with it. Your therapist understands this schedule because they live in this community, and we'll work with your rotation rather than against it.
Grief and loss
The death of someone you love, a relationship ending, or another loss that has changed the shape of your life.
Life transitions
Moving to Fort McMurray, a new job or a layoff, becoming a parent, separation, or retirement.
Self-esteem and relationships
Boundaries, people-pleasing, conflict, and patterns that keep repeating no matter who you're with.
If your concerns are related to trauma, see our Trauma & PTSD Therapy page →. If attention and focus are the issue, our ADHD Assessment page → may be a better place to start.
Somewhere to Sort Things Out
Sometimes you can name exactly what's wrong. Other times you just know that things don't feel the way they used to. Either way, individual counselling gives you a private hour with someone whose only job is to help you make sense of it.
At Stillwater Therapy, you meet one-on-one with a therapist in our Fort McMurray office. No referral is needed, and you can view current availability and book online anytime.
How Counselling Works at Stillwater
Your first session
Your therapist will review consent and confidentiality, then get to know you: what's happening now, what you've tried, and what you'd like to change. You set the pace and decide what to share.
Finding the right approach
Our therapists draw on evidence-based approaches including [therapy approaches used by the team — confirm, e.g. cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), emotion-focused and solution-focused therapy], chosen to match your goals rather than a one-size-fits-all formula.
How often and how long
Many people start weekly or every two weeks, then space sessions out as things improve. Some come for a few sessions to work through something specific; others stay longer. Your therapist will check in with you regularly about how it's going.
Choosing Your Therapist
Twelve-hour shifts, rotating days and nights, camp work, and an hour of commuting each way. One partner sleeps while the other gets the kids ready. Days off get spent catching up on everything that didn't happen during the rotation, and the relationship quietly drops to the bottom of the list.
Add being hours from extended family, with no easy babysitter and no one to vent to over coffee, and it's no surprise that couples here end up drifting. Our therapists live and work in this community. They've seen these patterns many times and know how to help couples rebuild around a schedule that won't change.
Counselling that Fits
Your Schedule
Twelve-hour shifts and rotations make standing weekly appointments unrealistic. Appointments are available seven days a week, between 8 AM and 8 PM, and you can book online any time to see real-time availability and fit sessions around your rotation. Virtual sessions are also available so you can keep up with your therapy even when working remotely or
out of town.
