What is ADHD?
ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is a neurodevelopmental condition that can affect attention, executive functioning, organization, impulse control, activity level and emotional regulation.
ADHD can look different from person to person. Some individuals experience obvious difficulties with attention or impulsivity, while others may primarily struggle with organization, procrastination, time management, forgetfulness or keeping up with competing demands. ADHD can affect school, work, relationships, home life and day-to-day functioning.
An ADHD assessment can help determine whether ADHD may explain the difficulties someone is experiencing and whether another condition, or a combination of factors, may better account for those concerns.
Not All ADHD Assessments Are the Same
A diagnosis should be based on more than simply completing an online questionnaire.
At Stillwater, we provide in-depth, comprehensive ADHD assessments that involve approximately 8 hours of clinical time, from initial intake and clinical interviewing through standardized assessment, interpretation, and detailed report writing.
We take the time to gather information from multiple sources and consider the individual's history, current functioning and real-world experiences. The result is a detailed clinical report, not just a diagnosis or a brief summary of questionnaire results.
What Is Included in an ADHD Assessment?
We begin by understanding the concerns that brought you to assessment, including current symptoms, functioning, and relevant personal, developmental, academic, and/or occupational history.
1. Comprehensive Intake and Clinical Interview
You will complete standardized questionnaires designed to assess ADHD symptoms and related areas of functioning.
2. Standardized ADHD Questionnaires
Your psychologist integrates information from the clinical interview, questionnaires and other assessment measures to develop a comprehensive understanding of your presenting concerns.
3. Clinical Assessment
ADHD does not occur in a vacuum. Where appropriate, we gather information from people who know the individual well.
4. Additional Perspectives
For teens: A parent and/or teacher may be interviewed or asked to complete questionnaires.
For adults: A partner, family member or close friend may be asked to provide collateral information through questionnaires or an interview, when appropriate and with the individual's consent.
Gathering information from multiple perspectives can provide a fuller picture of functioning across different settings.
We interpret assessment results alongside your history and reported functioning. The purpose is not simply to determine whether someone "checks enough boxes," but to understand the overall clinical picture.
5. Clinical Interpretation
Following the assessment, the psychologist prepares a comprehensive report outlining the findings, clinical conclusions and individualized recommendations.
6. Detailed Psychological Report
Where appropriate, recommendations may address strategies and supports for school, work, home and everyday functioning.

Yes. Adult ADHD is common and is often missed in childhood, particularly in women and in people who compensated well at school. We assess adolescents 12+ and adults.

An assessment involves approximately 8 hours of clinical time across intake, clinical interviewing, assessment, interpretation and report writing. Reports are typically ready in about 2 weeks.

No. An assessment is an objective clinical process. If ADHD isn't the best explanation for your difficulties, your report will describe what else may be contributing and what may help.

No. Psychologists assess and diagnose but do not prescribe medication. With your permission, we can share your report with your family doctor or psychiatrist to help inform treatment decisions.
